Conceptual

Introduction

The conceptual project emphasizes creativity through poetry, music, art, animations, experimental film and web production. By developing technical communication skills through learning a variety of modern professional equipment and applications such as DSLR Cameras, Tascam Audio Recorders, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Animate, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Audition, Avid Pro Tools, WordPress, and several other Google Apps.

In the past quarter I learned about the resources available to me. I have been trying to push myself more and more to what I know I’m capable of doing. In English, I have enough confidence to express myself, show my work to classmates and to take in feedback. In Digital Media, I have valued the challenges I have overcome while working with brand equipment but over time I have grown to enjoy it and become attached towards it. Overall, I really enjoyed doing the Conceptual Unit because it has allowed me to focus and develop my ideas as well as to make sure my ideas were creative inorder for the outcome to become even better.

Art Reflection

The first project in English and Digital Media was based on a field trip to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The assignment was to find an art piece that causes the feeling of awe. We needed to write notes of our initial thoughts and feelings towards the piece and take some photos. We had to write a 3-4 sentence reflection of the piece. We then had to record the statement and create a video of the statement and an image of the piece.

During this project of creating a video, I grew technically by learning how to use Adobe Premiere Pro, which is a video editing software which I hadn’t worked with before. This project also helped me learn in a deeper level of conceptual thinking mindset.

Design

Introduction

In my design elective, students learned the basics of design, including principles, elements, and applications in digital media. Mostly working on the basics of adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. They explored design thinking, digital tools and hands-on projects to build both artistic and technical skills. While also introducing digital photography and completing creative photography projects using a camera.

Black and White Name Photography

For the first major Design project, students did a Black and White Name Photo assignment. In which students took photos of objects in the environment that looked like letters that then spell out their name. This project allowed students to use different lenses to photograph creatively. This project challenged me to think outside the box, using my surroundings to spell my name but doing it in a unique creative way and having infinite possibilities using my camera.

Conceptual Photo

The Conceptual Photo project was for students to think about representing a feeling or action through a non-direct object, abstracting a photograph to a metaphorical self portrait. Each student was given a prompt structure: “I am experiencing the feeling of _____ through _____.” I was assigned the statement: “I am experiencing the feeling of trust through compromising.” The guidelines of this project was to choose two objects that symbolize the concept (one for each experience/feeling) and should be arranged thoughtfully when photographed. I found a challenge in deciding what objects should symbolize each concept so I asked around my group. I was given a variety of options to choose from and after a process of brainstorming. I was drawn to the idea of using a glass of juice and a price tag to represent my two experiences/feelings.

My first item is a glass of orange juice on the edge of the table to represent trust. My second item is a price tag that represents compromising. I choose a glass of orange juice because it represents trust unilaterally. This object directly relates to my concept because it represents the small trust I have towards strangers. This is because even though I have a bit of trust towards them, I’m still cautious of them. I choose a price tag as my second item because it represents my concept directly while not being literal about it. It represents my concept of compromising when something is too expensive for the money budget. I was thinking of shooting either looking down or at an angel. This is in order to be able to see that the glass of orange juice is just a bit over the edge but is more on the table to show how I still have trust in strangers but not complete trust.

When editing my image in Photoshop I started off with cropping the image because I didn’t like the distracting top of my image so I cropped off a bit of the top of the image that applied to my final composition. I learned to edit the image by using adjustment layers for saturation, color balance, and vibrance to enhance my image. I specifically used the adjustment layer of saturation so the orange in the orange juice to be a bit more vibrant but not so much that it hurts your eyes.
