New Beginnings – Jan 13

When I heard the prompt “New Beginnings”, I immediately began to think the circle of life: the balance between birth and death – I think it is strangely beautiful when life comes full circle, and the old, wilted flower drops the seeds of the next generation. The picture I took is very dark and moody and almost the entire photograph except for the orange of the flower, representing the hope that comes with death. I incorporated the important elements of art and principles of design, such as leading lines and the rule of thirds.

Anonymous – Jan 27

For this photograph, I tried to capture an eerie picture of a neighboring house that has a gate in front of their long driveway. I used this to depict the theme of anonymity because they are so far away from the street, from the public, hidden away. I also used Photoshop to make the area behind the gate black and white, which I thought was a nice touch to add to the eeriness. I also made selections around the black and white area to make a more gradual ascent into color. For composition, there is a lot of repetition and leading lines within the gate’s pattern, as well as rule of thirds, as the center of the gate and the right side of it are both on the vertical third lines.

Trash – Dec 14

This photo is of some trash reminiscent of a holiday tradition that was slightly different this year because of a certain global pandemic. Normally my family celebrates Christmas with family members coming to our house, but obviously that could not happen this year. I desaturated color from the photo a bit because I wanted this to have a more sad tone, because basically everyone missed out on a lot of good things happening this holiday season.

Accidental Renaissance – Dec 9

Accidental Renaissance is one of the most difficult prompts I’ve ever heard, because it is so hard to make that kind of photo on purpose, I think mostly it comes about as a result of other types of photography, especially street photography. Many of the examples I viewed seemed to be taken firstly as portraits or urban/street photography, but turned out differently than expected and fell into the “Accidental Renaissance” category.

Hometown – Dec 2

The “Hometown” prompt was very interesting to me because it made me think about what in my hometown (Los Altos) really defined the town as a whole. I chose this spot because I think it is very reflective of the transformations that Los Altos is going through.

Black and White – Nov 18

I think Black and White photography is an underused tool that can definitely be used to an advantage in many situations. Most people realize that color brings a lot to a photograph, but don’t understand how the lack of color can actually deepen the meaning or tone of the photo. In this case, I really liked both color and black and white versions of the photos I was taking, but I decided that black and white was better for this photograph.

Leading Lines – Nov 10

In my photo, I tried to incorporate leading lines as much as I possibly could – I specifically took a picture of a building with a lot of detail that included many lines all across my photo, and I purposely framed the two lighting fixtures on the thirds as well, because those are also vertical leading lines that work to bring the viewer to view the entire photo.

Love Story – November 4

The prompt for this photo blog was “Love Story”, so I took a picture about a platonic love with man’s best friend. Pets are extremely important to many people, including myself, and the dog in this photo is my aunt’s dog, Tchai.

Weight – October 21

In this photo, I used a fast shutter speed to freeze my brothers hands and a baseball that he was tossing into the air. I think it shows that the ball is weightless, as it looks like it is floating. Metaphorically, I think the concept of weightlessness is very complex and interesting, as it can represent things like freedom or carelessness, which are very heavy, complicated subjects.

Symmetry Landscape – October 14

For this challenge, I took the symmetry part to not mean necessarily direct symmetry, but more of a balance or rough symmetry. So, on either side of this photo, there are houses, trees, and the road is roughly split down the middle. The main element of art/principle of design I used was balance, as that is very closely intertwined with the concept of symmetry. I thought the contrast and color looked really interesting on this photograph as well, as there are some really bright whites and some really dark blacks, like in the sky and in the shadows of the trees.
