introduction
Welcome, and thank you for visiting my page! My name is Maya Batra, and I am currently a high school senior studying design at Freestyle Academy of Communication Arts & Technology. In addition to my studies within this art-based program, I am simultaneously pursuing a typical high school curriculum at Mountain View High School, CA. Although songwriting and creating music make up my most enduring creative passion, I am most inspired by the design and visual communication fields, and hope to pursue a career in either website design, digital marketing, or visual advertising. In order to kickstart these goals, I will be studying Media, Culture, and Communication at New York University beginning this fall.
presentation
For my showcase production, I would like to share the documentary book that I created this year, which I feel accurately reflects my current abilities and will make way for relevant, insightful critique from experts like yourself. In my documentary book, I cover a young baker and his journey to stardom, as well as family members who venture alongside him as he bakes his way from a home kitchen to Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship. This initial stages of the process consisted of coordinating and conducting interviews, researching the life of my subject, and producing a 10-page outline of my book’s text. It was only after this that I began the design aspect of the project, for which I created graphic design elements, structured the book layout, worked with backgrounds, created color schemes, and edited photos. Regarding applications used to facilitate each component, I used Adobe Illustrator for the GDE’s, backgrounds, and colors, Adobe Photoshop for the photo editing, and InDesign for the book and photo layout. Below is the video showcasing this project, any feedback or criticism is greatly appreciated.
artist reel
This reel briefly showcases a variety of design work that I have completed at Freestyle Academy, ranging from early pieces to more recent ones I feel as if this compilation gives an accurate snapshot of my current design skillset, which I hope to expand on greatly as I continue to pursue this passion in future years.
reflection
During my time at Freestyle Academy, I have progressively come into my own as a creative individual by gaining hands-on experience in aspects of the visual communication field, which I hope to delve into further as I pursue incoming career-oriented opportunities. For instance, regarding digital marketing & advertisement, I had the chance to design my own product logo, as well as a traditional one-page advertisement and various mockups featuring my product. Other projects were less specifically geared towards my current vision of incoming pursuits but gave me skills that I feel will prove crucial in future work. This includes the designing of a movie poster and book jacket, to compliment a story produced in my English class. I am beyond excited to expand upon this set of projects while also exploring new components of visual art in my upcoming years.
