Paintings

Fish

For this project, I decided to paint a portrait of one of my characters. I learned a lot about digital painting. As an animator, I’m used to digital drawing, however painting is very different. I did not realize how different it was at first, and it took me several attempts before I was satisfied with my work. I learned that in painting, it looked better the more messy I was with my strokes and that I shouldn’t be trying to blend the colors too much. It was also helpful to stay zoomed out during the majority of it, because it allowed me to see where I should block in the colors.

If I could change anything about this painting, I would change the hair. That was by far the most difficult part of the painting for me. Every time I tried to paint the strands of hair, it would just look like weird streaks instead of strands. After trying to figure it out for hours, I settled for a more solid look. Although it was challenging, I appreciated the knowledge I gained in my attempts to fix the hair. I am most proud of the colors in this painting. Pink is a difficult color to work with but I think it worked out well overall

Overall, this project inspired me to get better at painting. I enjoy the look of paintings, and I’d like to be able to improve in terms of the time it takes to make one and the quality of the work itself.

To practice for our final painting piece, we also created some pastel paintings and watercolor paintings in Photoshop.

Before & After Comparisons + Photoshop 360 Gallery

We also learned how to create a slider on an image so you can see the before and after versions of it. My before and after comparisons feature the difference between my sketch and final piece of deep-sea monster designs I created.

We used Photoshop to create a 360 Gallery that the viewer can interact with by dragging the image around, allowing them to look around the virtual room. My 360 gallery features background art from animations I enjoy, similar to a museum gallery.

Surrealism

Sail

My surrealism piece is heavily inspired by my experience at Freestyle. The stacked chairs were from Freestyle’s campus, and Freestyle’s mascot is an octopus so I added tentacles. I like the aesthetics of outer space and the ocean, so I combined them for this project. The pumpkin heads are a reference to a show I enjoy, “Over the Garden Wall.”

I’m proud of how the colors turned out and the vibe the bike gives off. If I had to change something, I think I’d use a different background next time because it seems to overpower the main subjects of the picture. Overall I enjoy surrealism and I will continue to be inspired by it in future projects.

Multi-Layered Art

In our Digital Media class, we used Adobe Illustrator to design multi-layered art that we would eventually turn into a 3D design. For my project, I chose to create a lightbox with it. The videos and images below feature a time-lapse of my project in real life as well as the digital version of it.

The Crux was inspired by the game Genshin Impact. I created a design of one of my favorite characters, Beidou, looking at her ship. It was interesting to figure out how the lighting would work for this piece. While I generally dislike using Illustrator because I prefer using Photoshop to make art, I was happy with how the final product came out.
