Self-Portrait

A diptych is two seperate but related photos put next to each other. The photos are supposed to either be related by being of the same sort of idea, or by being opposites. In my case, I chose to make opposite photos. The assignment was to put across a part of yourself, by showing it, not telling it.

For my photoshoot, I wanted to use both a nature shot and something completely man-made. This project taught me a lot about time constraints and deadlines, for I could only use the camera assigned to me for about 4 days, only 1 of which I dedicated to taking photos - A mistake that I will not make again. However, I still did enjoy the project and gained a lot of knowledge in doing it.

Everybody needs a break every once in a while. If you keep working without taking a breather, you’re actually compromising your own efficiency. Taking some time out of your day to just relax and reflect can be more productive than actually doing the work, just because you’re composing yourself and recharging your brain for further use. When I take a breather, I isolate myself completely from all my worries, usually by going into a different setting or state of mind. My left hand photo shows the things in my life that are very stressful and taxing on my brain. Because of my fear of hard work, I’ve put the calculator in front and at an odd angle, making it look imposing and threatening despite the fact that it’s supposed to be a helpful appliance.

My right-hand photo shows the more relaxed part of myself. The picture shows the road in front of me suddenly curve and disappear from sight, as if I suddenly stop to just survey the surroundings and the rest of my environment. The sun shining through the trees combined with the surroundings creates a stark contrast from the sort of ominous, dark scene in the left hand photo. This entire photo is designed to be a reflection of what I feel while in my isolated state. Instead of looking down a long road towards the future and worrying about the obstacles in my path, I disregard them and focus on the beauty of the moment.
