Narrative Visual Perspective in English

When a sudden sickness disrupts peace in the Valley, a studious young sigil scholar must join hands with three other misfits to uncover buried history and heal the ancient scars of their world.

This unit in English, we had our world building project! We worked together in groups to brainstorm and build a world, characters, and a story. From this, we wrote a treatment and created a pitch presentation.

Throughout this project, I got a lot better at writing collaboratively, effectively communicating my ideas to group members as well as others unfamiliar with our project, and generally the whole brainstorming and writing process as a whole!

Writing the treatment with Aditi and Sofia was so much fun, and while we struggled a lot with plot structure, we had so much fun staying late after school and calling to work on it together. If you’re interested in more details about our story, here it is for you to read!

Here are some of the visuals we created during the process:

Map of the Valley where our story takes place, and symbols representing each of the tribes!

Our story takes place in a fairly isolated valley. There are four main tribes, Sigil, Alchemy, Music, and Blacksmith, who generally live separately, and a large city called Centrum in the middle of the valley where they all reconvene.

Our main cast! From left to right, they are: Lazarus (29), Tala (18, Sigil Tribe), Sol (15, Music Tribe), and Wren (19, Alchemy Tribe)

We created this story to be very character-driven. We wanted to make a diverse cast that had deep and like-able yet realistic characters who played off each other well. It was really important to us that in the end these characters were able to grow and learn from each other, and that their experiences felt genuine and relatable despite being in a fantasy setting.

On the left is a depiction of Vanquish Day, a yearly celebration, and on the right a short comic of an early scene where Tala’s grandmother is taken away.
Here is a concept illustration of a big machine room they find towards the climax of the story!

Finally, here is an edited recording of our pitch presentation, where we detail more of the world, characters, and plot. Enjoy!
