Reflections – English

Myself Through Art

In this assignment, we were asked to look at 5 pieces of art in the MoMA that both represented us and didn’t. Three of the pieces we selected would represent us while the other two would not. These pieces should reflect (or in some cases, not reflect) our core values and principles that we act on and live with every day. This project allowed us, as students, to look within ourselves and really ask, “Who are we? What do we believe in? What matters most to us?”

In conclusion, my own experience as an artist at Freestyle has contributed to my selection of artwork here at the personal museum in a number of ways. My core values and experiences as an artist have been that to do great work, you must work hard and accept failure as it comes. Perfection is impossible on the first attempt and you should never give up after the first try. However, I am also a perfectionist and believe that my sketchbook and projects should be perfect, and that if they are not, then it is not worth it to finish it or continue until it is perfect. This is one of the ways in which my experience shaped the reasons why I excluded some pieces of art. In my eyes, they are imperfect or with visible flaws that I do not like or agree with. This works conversely for the things that did make it in where I believe them to be perfect and aesthetic. Additionally, my tastes as an artist vary heavily from abstract to impressionist to simple to really anything. These tastes are reflected in my own works of art and in some of the artwork that I chose here. However, the ones that were excluded do not show these values or are done in such a way that it does not appeal to me. To conclude, my own experiences at Freestyle and in Maryland as an artist have shaped the way that I draw and the way that I judge, perceive, and love art.
