Photoshop Compositing

In Digital Media, we focused heavily on developing our Photoshop skills. We began by practicing combining simple images through blending layers, then after rounds of practice, created our own surreal Photoshop composition.

Photoshop Practice

Our surreal composition was directly connected to our study of worldbuilding–we could either create an image from our English narrative, or create a completley new world. For my surreal composition, I was inspired to add a magical twist onto surrealist artwork, and play into the mystery of space. In this world, there are three moons considered legend to humans–the center moon is the most angelic, and sought after, due to it’s iridescent wings. Large dandelion plants grow on the center moon, and fly into space, to bee seen from the sky by humans on earth.

Multi-Layered Art

Rough draft sketch

The multi-layered art project gave us the opportunity to explore laser-cutting to create topographical-inspired artwork. For this project, I was very inspired by Taylor Swift’s “willow’ music video. In the video, she is one of many witches who dance in the woods, distinct because of their glowing golden orbs of magic. When Mr. Flo told us about the option to create a lightbox, I thought it would be a beautiful way to showcase the magic of the orbs in the video. After drawing the rough sketch, we visualized each layer individually in Adobe Illustrator. I designed each layer with the others hidden, what would be covered by the frontmost layer. We then laser-printed each layer on cardstock, placed small pieces of foam between each piece of paper, and glued the layers together. I am so happy with how this project turned out. I learned so much about laser printing and wood engraving, and I enjoyed the assembly process. See the video of the assembly process and the final result below!

The last phase of this process was to use Adobe After Effects to create a 3D rendering of our multi-layered art. We learned how to keyframe in 3D space, and how to add a digital light source and camera angles, to show the dimensionality of our layered artwork.
