Narrative 2 (Digital Media)

Multi-Layer Art Project

For our first Digital Media project in the Narrative 2 worldbuilding unit, we were tasked with creating a multi layered art piece using Adobe Illustrator which would then be converted into a physical form, which in my case, was a multi layered laser cut wood piece.

First, my partner and I were tasked with creating a sketch of what we wanted to create. Since I have experience with drawing already, I made a sketch of the main character, Logan, of our worldbuilding project, Tank Monkeys.

We then uploaded the sketch to Adobe Illustrator, where we digitized the sketch by adding black lines, each on different layers to create a 3D effect.

We created the outline only version (right) as the file we needed for the wood laser cut. Then we colorized the Illustrator file to use it digitally in After Effects for a short video.

This is the finished 3d laser wood cut art piece, titled “Logan the Monkey”. Below is a video of the process of gluing the together the wood pieces.

Artist Statement

The main inspiration for this art piece was from my world-building project, Tank Monkeys, that I have been slowly developing for a few years now. The subject of this piece is the main character of my story, Logan, an old monkey war veteran who is basically just a cowboy monkey who struggles to survive in the desolate world of Tank Monkeys, being one of the last of his species. I decided to use wood for this laser engraved mandala design since I felt as though it gave it a more naturalistic feel that I wanted for Logan walking in a forest and smoking a cigarette.
