Narrative 2

Introduction

Senior year’s narrative 2 project was a large undertaking that promised to suck away all of our free time over the span of about 4 months. In fact, it’s sort of become my life at this point, and I do want to have my normal life back. In a matter of days I will, but until then, I continue to live inside of the senior narrative unit.

The project had the same general idea as the narrative 1 unit— the concept of creatively telling a narrative story. In film, the major difference for this project was the inclusion of dialogue. In our junior year narrative project, we weren’t allowed to use any dialogue, which was greatly restrictive. We were also taught about film equipment more in depth— that is, reflectors, sliders, dollies, Steadicams, and that sort of thing.

It was a lot. It still is. As I write this, I still have a lot to do, and I greatly wish I had the ability to slip into a week-long coma the moment this project is complete (which I could if I weren’t going on college tours in the northeast… I know, I know, it’s a hard knock life). But that doesn’t change the fact that I learned a hell of a lot during this project. I don’t think I ever appreciated lighting, boom mics, framing, composition, or aperture enough before this project, and I didn’t think much about shot types or classifications (singles vs. masters, long shots vs. close-ups, inserts vs. cutaways, etc.) at all. And even if this project posed a nightmare in organization, I learned a hell of a lot from this process as a whole. It’s certainly been a ride.
