Documentary
IntroDuction
The Documentary Unit was one of my favorite times at freestyle academy. In Animation we
learned to put together a large composition of all the things we learned to do into something that
was truly special. We incorporated the things we were learning in or english class into our animations.
I documented my sister and her struggles through quarantine and how she has overcome challenges
through her time in isolation. Putting these emotions and struggles into art was very special to me
and this unit will forever be a reminder of what I can create with the things I learn in freestyle.
Reflection
Through the unit there were three main projects that really made it special, one in each class.
All classes have their values and in this unit I explored the utility and value of taking each of
these classes at freestyle. This Unit was a project that spanned all of the classes and was based on
profiling someone for an article in english, A print option in digital media, an I used the interview
recording in my Animation Classes. The best part about freestyle in my opinion is the connections
between the classes and this unit really displayed that interesting and rare style of learning
environment.
The first project that was very helpful and taught me lots of interesting skills was using
InDesign to create a brochure in Digital Media. Using this software allowed me to bring my profile
article to life by using slick formatting and interesting color schemes. This project taught me how to
use the software and how to make unique text documents that can be printed out and used in real life.
I can see myself using these skills long after freestyle is over to create fliers and formal documents to
enhance my professional and personal life.
Documentary Brochure:
In our english class, we were tasked with interviewing a
noteworthy subject and creating a profile article on them and I choose to profile someone who was
struggling with mental health because it is a very important topic for me. I profiled my sister’s struggles
with mental health and the pandemic and how she learned to cope and overcome these adversities as
well as some advice that she has for people in her position.
This is Gloria Copeland. She is in the sixth grade
and through lessons learned through her struggles
in the pandemic she has learned to rely on herself
and other to cope with the isolation Covid instilled
on younger generations of students. She is doing
much better now that the pandemic has ended and
has adapted to a bad situation.
My profile article covers the struggles Of gloria and how she was able to overcome them using coping
skills and reaching out to the people that cared for her. We see an interesting story of how the pandemic tore
her down, and how she built herself back up after being crushed by the isolation of quarantine. We also see
some insight from gloria on things that others can apply to their own bad situations to make themselves able
to cope much easier.
In animation I took an interview recording
from a conversation between me and my sister and I created a unique animation out of the interview
recording. This project was one of my favorites because we were given complete creative freedom to
create whatever we wanted with the audio that was given.
Thank you to all of the lovely Freestyle teachers, this was one of the best units yet!
