Introduction

“How can I use unconventional forms to express myself?”

Conceptualization is the idea of thinking and implementing abstract ideas that break the norm of traditional forms of art, music, and poetry through complex thought processes and taking courage in not fearing the unknown. Using the unique idea every individual person creates, we implement it through the use of modern-day tech and equipment such as DSLR cameras, Tascam audio recorders, and the multitude of software editing apps used by the most creative thinkers such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Dreamwave, and more that is offered to us to assist in our creations.

Throughout the conceptual unit, I took pride in the projects we completed such as experimental films in our Film class. I was able to get hands-on with equipment used by professionals in the film making industry and apply it to my aspirations for upcoming projects. Learning about different filming techniques such as camera angles and setting opening scenes has broadened my knowledge of creative thinking in a unique way. In English, I was able to create my own haikus and narratives based on my own ideas and was able to explore a multitude of options that I could go to when it was time to write. Having the ability to pick my own route based on my own imagination gave me limitless opportunities that would result in a different product each time. Digital Media was the one subject to help tie everything into one cohesive project through the use of technology. Learning how to properly use software and implementing my knowledge to help create my projects from Film and English helped my projects become amplified in a creative way. The use of these applications also assisted me in learning the basics of Photoshop and Premiere Pro which will become useful later on.

Haiku

Frustration

During the conceptual unit, I created multiple forms of poetry that explored multiple styles of writing. Poetry styles such as haikus, ekphrastic poems, and free verse poems. For my Haiku poem, I used my concept statement, which was experiencing the feeling of irritation through being lost, and implemented the statement using nature. Along with nature, I used the skills I learned in Digital Media when it came to finding a sound that would perfectly match with the video production. The end result was a Haiku video that centered around a person that was lost in nature as they attempt to find a location on a map. The product would be the person getting lost as nature drowns their sensory details.

Poetry

“1-6” By Vikash Kumar

During the conceptual unit, I created multiple forms of poetry that explored multiple styles of writing. Poetry styles such as haikus, ekphrastic poems, and free verse poems. “1-6” is a poem about cars and moreover my passion for them. I grew up surrounded by heavy car culture and is part of who I am today. I chose to write this, describing the sensory details I experience during my journeys with my brother and by myself.

I valued the production of this free verse poem as it caused me to think more thoroughly into my passions that influence my ideas and made me come to the realization that cars are a core influence of my life and the writings I produce.

Creating poetry through images, writing, and audio has pushed me to become a more descriptive writer as I am challenged to constantly make works of poetry that can be implemented and understood in multiple ways.

Elements and Principles of Art

In Digital Media, we were asked to create a presentation on what the elements and principles of art were and use images we believed conformed to said principles. Using the internet or pictures we have taken, we were tasked with creating a slide show presentation discussing said principles ranging from symmetrical shapes, to completely abstract.

The World of Film

Conceptualization and film go hand in hand with each other. With the idea of conceptualization being random and purely creative and film being the perfect blank canvas to express your imagination, the conceptual unit gave way to works of create projects as everyone is unique in their thinking and how they implement those ideas onto the big screen. Film is a once in a lifetime opportunity in high school. With challenges on creatively filming your project using techniques used by the professionals, but also having the opportunity of having your film go in a million different directions, it offers chances for creative minds to flow effortlessly while being challenged. Film has been a unique experience as it is different to an ordinary art class as it shows you behind the scenes of movies and the process directors and actors go through of some of your favorite movies.

Experimental Film Synopsis

On the image to the left, is the synopsis I wrote for our experimental film during the conceptual unit in film. In English, during the production of our haikus, we were giving a concept statement, which will be the main idea of the haiku. We were also be told to use this same statement in our experimental film. My concept statement “exploring the feeling of irritation through being lost” set my film to be designed around a person slowly losing their sanity as they got lost in what seemed like an endless void. Although my plans for my experimental changed, this synopsis laid the base foundation for my film and what it has come to be.

As the film production progressed, my original idea shifted from the setting to be on a trail to somebody’s home. The idea was that every time they opened a door, it will lead to something that wasn’t their house, but will then switch back. This endless void and process of them getting lost will make them go mad.

In the image above, the interface for the app, Adobe Pro Premier is shown to present the work put in used in the final cut of my experimental film. Here, you can see audio clips, trimmed video clips, and special effects in some clips to produce the final cut.
