CONCEPTUAL

Introduction

“How can I use unconventional forms to express myself?”

During the semester we were challenged to express our ideas and to portray our own aesthetic through the use of abstract art, poetry, and experimental film. We were introduced to modern-day professional equipment and programs, such as a DSLR camera, a TASCAM voice recorder, and applications like adobe premiere and pro tools

As a freestyle film student, i value the importance of having creative mind when it comes to being a artist. The projects during the semester helped me improve my creative skills and express my artistic ideas in a unique way. This unit has tought be to express my own personality and ideas to art in ways that i see fit.

Photo Haiku

For this assignment, we were asked to create a haiku based on a conceptual statement that we were given. We were then asked to use adobe premiere in order to produce a video with our audio recording, sound, and our photo haiku.

Through the use of Adobe Premiere, I was able to create a haiku video with music audio, voice audio, and key frames to create a video that empresses the mood of my photo haiku.

This was one of the first and probably one of my favorite projects of the semester. This project had taught me to think outside the box, as we were asked to make up a haiku that matches a specific statement. For my statement specifically, it was to ” explore the feeling of adoration through reuniting with a friend”.

Creative Poetry

For this project, we were asked to use our skills in literature and art in order to create a free-verse poem.

For this poem, I really wanted to capture the feeling of when we scream. In order to capture this feeling, I had to describe the good and the bad. The word paralysis means frozen in fear. I really liked that title because it really matches how you feel when you scream. In the first stanza, I used Ekphrasis in order to describe the good to contrast with the bad. Oftentimes when we scream it can be for a good reason. we feel joyful and happy. This could be after a surprise party, or when you find out some good news. To describe the situation that happens with other people around, I used the metaphor “ listening to a sea of people” to show how when we scream, others can catch on and experience the same feeling. This can be applied to when you feel a rush of happiness cheering for your favorite sports team at a stadium. For the second stanza, I wanted to shift the tone of the poem from good to bad and talk about its negatives. Throughout the second stanza, I added lineation and punctuation to give structure and give the readers almost a sense of being claustrophobic when reading the poem. When we scream, we do feel anxious and afraid. I used personification on adrenaline, and how it enters our body when we feel most shocked. I also used “ echo traveling across the room” to really emphasize how the sound of our scream can carry on a long-distance, for possibly others to hear as well. For the last stanza, I really wanted to emphasize the mysterious aspect of the screaming behind the painting. As viewers of this painting, we don’t know why he is screaming. In my honest opinion, I view this painting as an ominous and mysterious painting.  This is why I ended off with “ forever shouting and yelling at me for every unknown reason”. I really took into consideration the metaphors and descriptions I used for every situation. I wanted this poem to be relatable with others and for others to relate to the feeling when they scream, or how they feel when they look at the painting.

This project taught me how to edit voice audio and gave me an intro to pro tools. It had also taught me how to develop my ideas when writing the ekphrastic poem.

Elements & Principles of Art

In my digital media class, we spent time learning and using the 7 elements and 6 principles of art and design and implanting them in our freestyle projects. We were asked to a photo and or artwork for each principle and element of design.

Experimental Film

In my Film class, we were asked to portray the visuals of our conceptual ideas from our concept statement. For my concept statement, it was ” Exploring the feeling of adoration through reuniting with a friend.” I decided to use experimental aspects for the film like broken crayons and bins. The way I decided to show adoration from a reunion is by showing the crayons separate from one having been broken and by reuniting after both crayons have been broken. In our class, we were asked to create an experimental film synopsis.

The Crayons – Experimental Film

We started with capturing our scenes on our DSLR. Throughout the class, we spent time discussing experimental pitches, presenting our dallies, and giving feedback to other people in our class. We then edited our footage in Adobe Premiere Pro with appropriate music and sound effects.
