Diptych

A diptych is a large composition composed of two objects which are in some way related; in our case we placed the two photos side by side in order to create a conflicting theme. In my case, my two photos contradict each other in the sense of past and future, but also in their meaning. You can see my diptych below...

In this diptych, my goal was to portray how significant dreams are, and how when we let go of our dreams, we let go of who we are. The first photo resembles excitement and youth. The bright lighting, in combination with the dancing, and the colorfully dressed hippies, shows a bright future, and the dreams and aspirations they want to achieve. This relates to me because my dreams are in some ways what define me as an individual. When I think about and remember all my crazy ideas, both of the past and present, I feel truly alive, as if anything is possible.

The second photo is arranged in a more sober and serious mood, for it is meant to resemble what life is like devoid of hopes and dreams. Now, the same hippies from the previous picture are sad and life doesn’t seem to carry the same meaning. They have left their dreams behind in hopes of achieving the stereotypical ‘success’ society expects us to attain, meaning growing up and leaving behind all shreds of childhood. This relates to me personally, because as time goes on, I can feel my self forget and dismiss my ideas, as they begin to seem impossible and irrational; which results in me losing many of the things that set me apart. Each of the hippies do, however, have their own remnant of the past, showing that it they are not completely hopeless, showing that even though I may forget sometimes, I am always able to go back to those times and recall those crazy ideas which may seem unrealistic, but which are completely my own.
