The swooshing cars honk at one another even though there not getting anywhere. John feels cracks at the bottom of his shoes bending, the rubber soles. The light breeze rushes through his hair gently pushing the long strands towards the people behind him. His hands warm and toasty in his pocket, like a cake baking in an oven turning it light brown. “Burr”, John says, as a cold chill zaps his bones all the way through his back.
John has heard so many different stories about his long lost father who had left when John was only 1, leaving behind John’s mom to raise him. People have said he left for another family, he was dead, or his dad left because he didn’t know how to raise a kid. John was determined to find out. So he went to his Uncle’s job at a café. His uncle was working at a café right in the middle of time square. He was working the cashier when John walked in. John ordered a frappe chino and asks his uncle if he had any clue what happened to his dad. John’s Uncle says, “I don’t know, but last I heard he was in Italy, Rome I think.” “Wow, all the way over there huh? You know I’ve been thinking”, says John, what if I went looking for him? Do you think he will want to see me?” “Well he is a sincere guy maybe he’d be delighted to see you”, says John’s Uncle. “Hmmm”, says John, “Well I guess I’m going to Rome.” “Oh I know a guy who said he was planning to go to Italy today I think you know him, his name is Rick. You know Rick”, says John’s uncle. “Oh I know Rick! That guy at that Christmas party, he was Santa Claus right?”asks John. “Yeah!” replies John’s Uncle. “Thank you so much, do you think you can give me his number so I can call him?” John asks. “Sure, just wait 15 minutes that’s when my break starts.” Okay “, says John. John sinks his butt into the cushion of the table booth, his coaster under his frappe. He swallows the ice cold frappe. His hands stiffen turning a pale white in the palm of his hands and finger tips. John decides to run to his house quickly to pack his bags and says bye to his mom. He comes back to the café and gets Rick’s information to fly to Rome, Italia.
The whistle in of air pushing through the Frame of the plane as it takes off into the clear thin sky. The morning crispness has disappeared above the clouds. John lands in Italy. Relief swallows his body. He steps off the plane. He checks into his hotel and goes for a walk. He stops at a cafe. He gets a frappe chino and sits in a booth, gazing at the picture of his father, that his mother had given him a long time ago. He takes a long sigh, saying to himself, "Where are you?" He stops at a Catholic Church and looks at a portrait of Mary and Jesus, reminding him of his mom. He strolls out of the church and as he walks down the street a familiar face passes him. He sees a thick man about 5’11 with a mustache, brown hair, brown eyes, just like the picture John had of his dad. John’s legs become weak, his heart pounds like drums in a rock band. He quickly looks at the picture of his father. But his nervousness takes control of him, holding him back as he remembers how nice it was to be with just him mom. He thinks of his dad again, then this overwhelming feeling controlling his state of mind bursts into him. He jumps up almost touching the sky. He has this burst of courage and energy. His feet take control as they go left right, right left, in a quick motion. He yells "wait, sir!" The man who he thought was his father had turned around and at that moment a feeling of surprise, comfort, and happiness all bundled up into one and had connected the two, together at last.
