My Culture

A Jar of Nước Mắm (Fish Sauce)

Nước mắm is a staple food in Vietnamese cuisine. A meal is thought to be incomplete without at least a dash of the sauce. Many families have their own recipes for nước mắm, and mine is no exception; pictured above is a jar I made based off of my grandmother’s recipe (with my own modifications). Because nước mắm reminds me so greatly of my family and its taste reflects the richness of Vietnamese culture, I chose it as a symbol of my cultural makeup.
