World Building

Throughout the World Building unit in English, I have developed my annotation skills in addition to reading and interpretation skills. The Parable of the Sower was a story about a girl who is going through a wartime with hyper empathy. As we read, we could see her growth and change. It was very entertaining to see how she responds to the terrifying and unpredictable things she faces. My World Building story was significantly inspired by this book. The main thing I was focusing on while reading this book was the Political side of this world. Politics have a big responsibility in war and the more I think about how politics can solve the situation, the more I was invested to develop a World Building story. Therefore, I decided to include politics as a main factor of my story.

Narrative Treatment

I grouped up with my friends Julie Park and Izzy Wang. We started off by making a solid character arc. We all agreed that we should make the main character relatable to us, so we set the main character as an Asian immigrant. Then we started developing the story arc. We wrote a narrative treatment as the final outcome of our World Building story.

Research Essay

The next step was to write a research essay on any topic that is related to my World Building story. My research topic was women’s discrimination in the workplace. I was inspired to research this topic because, in my story, the main characters face gender discrimination as they try to find jobs. People might think that gender bias is no longer a big issue these days. However, as I researched, I found out that in reality, there are so many women facing gender discrimination than we think including in the hiring process, wage, and job status.

Pitch Presentation

The pitch presentation was the final step of this World Building unit. We dressed, made slides, and presented in a very professional and formal way and gave a presentation with a setting that the audience were Film Director who’s wanting a new idea for their next project. We used Adobe Express for the first time and pretending like we were professional story makers was very fun.
