Introduction

While at Freestyle, I have developed an understanding of various art forms. For this project, my classmates and I were asked to produce a conceptual project, where our learning from each class, English, Digital Media, and in my case, Design, intertwined to create original abstract art. Poetry, photography, digital art and web-designing were key factors in creating this piece and establishing a personal aesthetic.

My Poem

Turning A Page

As apart of an introduction to Freestyle, I was taken to San Fransisco Museum of Modern Art, where I received inspiration to compose an ekphrastic poem. An ekphrastic poem is described as a vivid description of a scene, or more commonly, a work of art. Through the creation of this poem I have learned how to manage many tech applications including ProTools, an equisite audio editer, and Photoshop, an official photo editer.

Haiku Poetry

Haiku poems are traditional Japanese poems, collected by three verses, the first and last verses consist of five syllables while the middle verse is composed of seven syllables. Within my English class, each student was told to pick two words/phrases to fill in the sentence, “I am exploring the feeling of ___ through the feeling of ____.” I was paired with “I am exploring the feeling of fear through the feeling of speaking up.” Instantly I thought of women who are in fear of heir rights being unequal to men, and how many who share this fear participate in annual Women’s rights marches and rallies. I also thought of my mom, who always tells me that I should be inspired by others doubting me, by proving them wrong. This was why she was featured within the photo, holding the ledge as a representation of her dignity as a woman, and mother. In digital media, we learned how to use Adobe Premiere Pro, which cultivated my Haiku video.

Haiku Video

Through the Haiku unit I cultivated the skill of breaking down large concepts into a minimalistic poem. Editing the video taught me patience, because when certain effects did not work as I wanted, I had to keep trying until they eventually did.

Elements + Principles of Art

The Elements and Principles of design are the most crucial properties to the art world. Without knowing these values, it would be impossible to differentiate artwork, because all art contains them. In this unit, I searched the web for three different examples for each element and principle, these included traditional, photography, and modern art.

Intro to Design

So far, studying design has taught me that design is apart of every aspect within the art world. From the design to a desk, to a skirt, every object is impacted by design in one way or another.

Artist Statement

I am exploring the feeling of sorrow through the feeling of growing up. I have photographed a wrinkled paper plane placed on the bottom of a playground slide, giving the viewer a choice of deciding whether the plane is taking off, or landing.  The plane was placed on a slide with blue slits of duct tape representing an airport runway.

Many times, flying on an airplane signifies a form of goodbye, or a segway to a new origin. Similarly young people want to hover away from youth and abruptly mature to adults. The paper airplane and slide reveal the adolescent side of the photo, relating to a playful childhood. I shot the photo right as golden hour was occuring to depict shadows over the focal point. The shadow over the slide creates a gloom that ties sorrow. Shooting from a bird’s eye view gave me the opportunity to capture the whole scene, and (lighting, background, angle described here + why i chose them and how they support my concept)

The paper plane was crumpled and creased because I wanted to emphasize that  adolescence is a small portion of our lives can never be redone, just as crumpled paper can never be completely smoothed again. The wrinkles also correlated with the irreversible deterioration of technology and media that has been implemented on modern day youths. I mentioned this topic within my poem paired with the concept statement to portray my frustration, and sorrow with the coming generations lack of authenticity.

Using Adobe Photoshop strengthened my photo in several ways. Adding vignette, and applying various layers such as improving contrast and adjusting saturation improved my vision immensely.

Alphabet Photo

This was our first assignment at Freestyle, my design classmates and I constructed our names through nature and objects, and we were not allowed to photograph actual letters. Through Photoshop, we learned how to edit and place photo of every letter and create our name.

Elements of Art Photo Collage

For this photo collage, we showed elements of art with the use of our DSLR cameras. We also used Adobe Photoshop to edit the collage and form the photos to come together as a collage.

To conclude, so far I have been tremendously impacted by Ms. P’s knowledge, I aspire to continue my growth in learning more ways of art and design. I mostly enjoyed adapting photoshop but I am excited to continue the ultimate intellectual process that is Freestyle.
