Food Photography

Reflection

I decided to theme my Zenith project Foodography and Restaurant Marketing with Daniela Shapiro for a multitude of reasons. When lockdown and self quarantine first began I was feeling isolated and lonely. I would often reminisce about all the fun things I’d do together with my friends. We would enjoy the movies, picnics at viewpoints, or simply grab a nice meal. I had an idea that would virtually bring us closer together and instantly texted my two friends, Daniela and Izzy. I asked them, “Guys what would we always do together that has been completely STRIPPED from us now” and their immediate responses were “hang out and get food.” I proposed an idea, a Foodies Imessage group chat. Foodies is where Daniela, Izzy, and I photograph each of our meals and send them to one another. We support each other by reacting to the texts, various emojis, and a whole bunch of “MMMM” and “YUMMM.” A year later, and we are still contributing to Foodies on the daily. It is truly just the beginning of an era, as we plan to continue Foodies well past graduation. Next year, with Daniela in France, Izzy in Berkeley, and myself in Israel, I cannot WAIT to see our foodie futures.

When it came down to choosing a Zenith project, Daniela and I knew EXACTLY what our theme had to be, Food. As fellow chefs, we worked perfectly together. I am so grateful to have a best friend who values food just as much as I do, and takes the time to create and appreciate taste. Much of the time we spend together we are making food, talking about it, or trying something new. It’s the best, so this project was a no brainer to do together.

My inspiration came from her, as she runs a food instagram account @dani.eatz on Instagram as well as many other social media food influencers. Some names include, @lindsayeats @carolinagelen and @lahbco. As I am vegetarian, these influencers have wonderful plant based recipes which I use frequently!

If I could do the project over again, I would most likely create a menu which matches accordingly to the dishes we made. I loved both of our menus, but the dishes we made were completely different due to lack of time and senior procrastination. Although, I do believe this project proved that I could depend on myself for food with whatever resources available.

To conclude, I have learned that with practice comes skill and delivery, and I appreciate this project for showing me how much quarantine positively pushed me to be independent and find activities I love to do. For any listeners hesitant about trying new foods, I want my final note to be – go for it! Push yourself to new heights and enjoy your food journey, you only get one life to try all the foods, and there are so so many tastes to explore!
