Introduction

At the end of our senior year, Freestyle Academy students are assigned with a Humor Project. In my opinion this was the most simple project of the year. We were told to make a video, image, do a stand up, or create any other type a humor composition. I decided to create a satirical image, and chose the topic of women’s rights and gender stereotypes.

Inspiration

After reading Slaughterhouse-Five, Mr. Greco gave us a satirical cartoon by “The Onion” and asked us to analyze it in class.

This assignment was super collaborative, which I liked and it inspired me to make something similar.

Process

I started off by finding a satirical image online that I could analyze. On a doc I typed out my reaction, observations, and any other thoughts I had. Then created a “Discovery Draft,” where I wrote out my analysis into essay form. This helped me understand and notice the deeper meanings satirical cartoons have. This helped me build ideas on how I wanted to structure my image.

After this I started to focus on the product I wanted to make. Once I decided on my topic, women’s rights and gender stereotypes, I began by drawing out a sketch. Then I showed my sketch to my teacher in order to receive feedback. After this, I made my final edits and prepared my presentation in order to show the class my final product.

Product

My presentation consisted of a title slide, my product (satirical image), and the humor techniques I used.

Reflection

Like I said, this project was simple which was a nice way to wrap up our senior year a Freestyle Academy. I really enjoyed listening to everyones presentations because I got to see how people express humor in different ways. My favorite product were videos people created because the skits were super funny and entertaining to watch.
