Narrative Visual Perspective in Film

1 Period Film

Lighting Scavenger Hunt

In complete honesty, one of the things I valued in this unit is something my narrative film group should’ve done in the first place: planning efficiently. There are three processes that make up creating a film: pre-production, production, and post-production. This year, with the addition of dialogue and lighting in our films, we needed much more planning.

Pre-production was the process of creating the screenplay, first by pitching it to our producer, then breaking it down with notes and categories so that we may consider factors such as props, cast, setting, action, etc. before we begin filming. Then, in production we finally start creating our film, looking over our script breakdown notes, we can consider what is needed on certain days so that we can efficiently get the shots we need way before the deadline. Finally, post-production is all the editing of our shots into our masterpiece film (we recently learned how to use slates, which help us label our shots).

Sadly, our group spent WAY too long on the pre-production process, and we ended up mashing up production and post-production together. Our film still was turned in late in the end. However, I saw this as a lesson for when I start making films in the future during my time in college. I can either help advise my fellow crew on how we can be more efficient, or even lead the filming process better through this learning experience at Freestyle Academy.
