Kai Zhou
Hello, my name is Kai Zhou. I attended Mountain View High School (MVHS) from 2020-2024 and Freestyle Academy from 2023-2024.
Freestyle was recommended to me by my counselor due to my interest in art. Freestyle was a great way to try things I haven’t tried yet and work with really talented people. Although the work load was a bit heavy at times, I really enjoyed being able to work on all the different kinds of projects throughout the year. A great thing about Freestyle is how much creative freedom we had on a lot of the projects.
Going into Freestyle in Senior year, I really had no idea what to expect. But by the end, I wished I had applied earlier and got a chance to attend during my Junior year as well. The classes at Freestyle were much more involved with each other compared to the classes I took in MVHS. One of my favourite units was the Narrative 2 unit where we got to do worldbuilding with fellow peers for English and create a stacked art piece based off of it for Digital Media. Having chosen Animation as my elective, I also got a chance to work with classmates on a 3D animated short where we used the characters we designed previously to tell a story. Throughout all of Freestyle, I’d like to think that I got a lot better at communication and collaboration due to the variety of group projects.
Freestyle taught me how to do so many things that I don’t think I would have ever tried if I hadn’t attended. Everyone at Freestyle is so talented and I am really glad that I got the chance to meet and work with them.
