Narrative Visual Perspective in Digital Media

For the Multi-Layered Art Project, we were tasked with creating an artwork in Adobe Illustrator, then moving this digital creation to a 3D format, and then finally into a video. I decided to base this project off of the Narrative Treatment that I created in my English class. In this, I wanted to show a scene of a car driving away in a town with a water tower in the background. I first started out with wanting to create a city, but after sketching it out and figuring out the logistics of it, it seemed too difficult to make if I was going to end up 3D printing it.

For the first part of this project, it all started in Adobe Illustrator. Here is an image of one of my sketches:

After working to bring this idea to life, I then created it in Adobe Illustrator and I made a few changes so that it would look better later. Here is what my finished layered project looked like in Illustrator with some added color.

After creating this, we had to rearrange the different sections into different areas so that Mr. Flo could laser cut the design into wood using as few pieces as possible. After doing this, Mr. Flo then printed out the wood art. Next, I had to sand down all the wood so that it had a nice finish and then glue the pieces together. Here is a video of me assembling the stacked wood to give it the 3D effect.

My inspiration for my project is the story that I created in my english class, titled Washed Out. For this project, I decided to depict a scene from the narrative story, and show when the main characters were driving out to the water tower. I used this scene to illustrate a main section of the plot and to show the importance of the water tower. I am really happy with how this turned out and I also love how it goes with what I created in design and that I have this recurring theme in multiple of my artworks. I also think that it is really cool how we can start with a digital design and make it 3D, and then3D represented visually. It is really cool to be able to make it from a physical production to an animated 3D digital production because it makes it clear and easy to understand the process that we went through when making it. It is really hard to do but I think once you start working in the workflow it gets easier and easier. I think that this is a very helpful tool for the future.
