Narrative Visual Perspective in Digital Media

“Serpent of Babel” – Multi-Layered Art Project

In Digital Media, we were meant to create layered art in Adobe Illustrator that paints a picture of a scene, to be transformed into a laser-cut finished product. I worked with my classmate Camilla on this piece, and we chose to design a Lightbox, laser cutting layers out of paper and shining LED lights behind them to create a 3D effect.

Artist Statement

This project was a collaboration between my peer Camilla Robinson and I. Although we have separate worldbuilding concepts, we both happened to have a serpent/sea dragon in our stories. In my story, the main characters seek out an ancient power source known as the Babylonian Heart, which comes from an ancient monster named Babel. This lightbox depicts what the monster once looked like.

Producing 2D multi-layered art was a unique challenge because each layer had to connect to the borders (no floating parts). Seeing the piece I designed in Adobe Illustrator come to life as a tangible light-box I could hold was very satisfying, and finding out easy it is to do motion tracking in After Effects demystified it for me. There is so much potential to add onto my animations using After Effects with 3D and I love it. I could also use my skills in Illustrator and After Effects to make motion graphics for editing videos.
