Narrative Visual Perspective in Film

The EPIC Narrative Film is the biggest film project that our entire experience culminates in. This was not an easy film project. It was hard, difficult, and challenging. We have to use all of our narrative skills that we’ve learned in the past two years and apply them to a brand new script that we would develop and eventually produce into a final project. I think this project really tested my limits but allowed me to break through in the end.

What you see in the above image is the pitch deck for my first narrative idea. We wanted to go through the entire filmmaking process as a class so we can learn how they do it in the industry. So I created and presented this pitch deck to the class. It didn’t end up being created but it was good practice to make before the actual script was written.

Practice Videos

Before we started producing our films, we needed to get a bunch of practice filming with narrative techniques. So below there are a couple videos that show my practice leading up to the narrative film.

This video was a practice film where we had to make a short little story using the equipment and time we had in class. It was kind of silly but was also a necessary project to let us get to know each other and get us back in the “narrative mood” as Mr Taylor put it.

This video was a practice film to hone in our skills with audio design.

Screenplay

The screenplay was the most time consuming part of the project. I spent months and months tweaking the script to be ready for shooting. And after trying over and over, I finally got it to where it is today, Flicker V3. That way I could move into the next part of pre-production,

Shotlist

The shotlist is where I spent all my time mapping out each shot for my cinematographer. I used a special storyboarding software to set the exact position of the shots and then I used the freestyle storyboarding templates to plan it out.

Production

During production, I only had to shoot at two different locations. I covered all the interior shots in my friend’s house. And then I filmed my basement shots in the basement of my other friend’s house. This was a very tiring and testing part of the project, but I had a really great team to guide me along the way so it turned out really well. And I think my crew had fun filming together.

Reflection

The narrative film has given me tremendous growth as an organizer. This challenged my by taking a job that is supposed to be done by various people and giving it all to me. This put a lot of creative pressure on me to work things out correctly, but also allowed me to learn about organizing and how to do it efficiently. Where now I feel more confident going into my next filmmaking job knowing that I can handle all the different aspects of pre production.
