Reflection – Animation

This year of Animation for seniors focused on the art of 3D animation. In first semester, we’ve learned how to use:

  • Maya for modelling, rigging, animating, and rendering.
  • Z-Brush for sculpting our works and decimating them for exporting.
  • Substance Painter to color our models and how to bake-mesh the layers.

I’ve learned how to translate my creativity and attention-to-detail from drawing onto 3D modelling. The freedom that came with being able to easily alter aspects of a model and view it from any angle was a nice change of pace from digital, 2D art.

For the character I’d model, I decided to use a design I’ve already made. Some things I edited for my character, Dakota, was removing the tail and feathered ears for easier modelling.

I’ve then made a basic shape model of her on Maya.

To color Dakota, I used Substance Painter.

When ready, I made a character-bio of the finished, rendered model.

We modeled 3D weapons and I chose to make a Monkey-Themed dagger.
