Visual Narrative

Synopsis

My partner Elayna and I are making our narrative film about a girl who is addicted to her phone. She is constantly on it everyday no matter where she is or what she’s doing or who she’s with. To shoot this, we are going to start by filming her morning routine. We are going to film close-ups of her putting on her clothes, brushing her teeth, and eating cereal while on her phone to establish her relationship with it. When she’s in class, we are going to get close-ups of her hands under the desk texting while the teacher is teaching. Later, when she’s hanging out with her friends, she is still on her phone while her friends converse at a coffee shop and play soccer in the park. We will get medium and close-ups of her to establish she is completely out of touch with the world around her. At the end of act I, she is walking alone downtown, on her phone. She then runs into a pole, drops her phone, and it cracks.

Act two begins with her taking her phone to the iPhone repair shop. Then, we film her morning routine again for the next day where she is upset and depressed because she doesn’t have her phone. We are planning on capturing this feeling with still medium shots of her going in and out of frame. Once she gets to school, we will capture her confusion and feeling of being lost using closeups of her face in class. Then, she looks up at the board and becomes interested in what her teacher is writing. At this point, the pace of our shots will become quicker and more lively. She then goes to the same coffee shop with her friends and actually interacts with them. We’ll get medium shots of her smiling and talking to the people around her while enjoying her coffee. Then, she and her friends go to the park to do homework. She finishes her homework before everyone else and decides to take a walk through the forest. We will mix up the shots here with some following her, some aerial view, and some from her POV. She brings a sketchbook and sits on a rock, drawing the trees.

She goes to pick up her phone the same day and becomes overwhelmed with all the notifications flooding in. She puts her phone away just in time to realize she almost walked into another pole. We will use close-ups here to show her feeling of relief and content. The next morning, we film her daily routine again except this time energetic and with her putting her phone in her pocket. There will be a mixture of close-ups and POV shots to show liveliness. On her way out, she takes her phone out of her pocket and leaves it behind. We will show her emotions about this decision using closeups.
