Reflection

photo of my hand in the fancy mirror frame

For reflection, I photographed myself through my mom’s old mirror, which she brought with her from Israel and which my family has had for over thirty years. Instead of taking a normal mirror picture, I only included my arms and hands in the reflection, which makes the image a little more unusual and forces you to notice the mirror itself. I especially wanted to capture the detailed wooden frame and the repeating shapes around it because those are details I have seen countless times without really stopping to appreciate them. There is also something fitting about using an object from my mom’s past for a photo about reflection. I’m literally seeing part of myself through something that has been part of my family’s life since long before I was born.
