Expectations

This is my artwork created using illustrator to depict two conflicting traits of my identity using abstract images. The trait I chose was having high expectations. The benefits of this trait is evident in acheivements but it also leads to an undesireable restlessness. My choice of this trait was probably influenced by one of my favorite books "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens. I used the motifs in this novel as inspiration for my own artwork.

Artist Statement

For my self-portrait illustrator, I showed the conflict between the achievements that come with having high expectations and the lack of satisfaction from always wanting to achieve more.

I placed a wishing well out of proportion to a skyscraper to represent the goals I set for myself that can be beyond my abilities. There is also an abandoned stuffed animal lying next to the well that represents giving up the happiness of the moment for the more rewarding pursuits. Attached to the well is a noose, which represents the depression resulting from failing to achieve my goals. The airplane is aimed well above the skyscraper to show how I ultimately envision my own success.
