Self-Portrait Diptych

Diptych Thumbnail

In my diptych, I juxtaposed two photographs to show an aspect of my identity. I took thirty photos of each shot, before selecting my favorite ones and editing them in Photoshop.

Artist Statement

My first photo is of a work table with books as well as distractions such as an iPod and a Rubik’s cube. It is a low lighting shot to represent the unpleasant nature of work. This is often the mood I feel whenever I work both in and outside of school. Work can be very time-consuming and is not always rewarding. I’m drawn toward doing easier tasks such as playing, represented by the Ipod, which gives me guaranteed pleasure, instead of what needs to be done.

The second photo shows a mess of money abandoned on the ground along with a cluttered Rubik's cube. This image extends the idea of the ease at which I give up when I’m faced with challenges. The Rubik’s cube, while fun to play with at first, is very difficult to solve if you don’t know what you’re doing. This represents my discomfort in pursuing things that I’m uncertain about. The coins represent an inconvenience, easily lost as well as space consuming. These seemingly insignificant tasks I surrender lead up to greater losses as shown by the cash.
