Introduction

For our final project of our time here at Freestyle, we were given the freedom to choose our own project and set our own deadlines. This was a very unique project spanning over the last two months of our senior year and I was excited to explore something new. After a lot of brainstorming, I chose to sculpt a set of three dinosaurs!

Process

I started by building the armature, which was a wire frame to get the overall shape of the dinosaurs. Click on the photos to expand them!

Next, I used foil to build the body of the dinosaur around the armature. I used techniques like scrunching up the foil to get volume and wrapping sheets of foil around to hold everything together. Creating a foil base ensures the sculpture won’t be as heavy as it would be if it was made out of solid clay. Click on the photos to expand them!

Once all the foil frames were built, I covered them all with clay. I rolled out thin sheets of clay and wrapped them around the body, smoothening the edges together with my fingers and clay tools. Click on the photos to expand them! Also don’t worry, I fixed all the cracking visible on the t-rex and triceratops with more clay after I took the photos.

Completed project

Finally, I painted everything! I used acrylic paint for all of them and mixed white and black into the chosen color to create tints and shades to add details. Click on the photos to expand them!

Reflection

Here is the reflection I wrote and recorded about my project!

A special thank you to Ms. P for teaching me basically every step of this whole process because when I started, I was a complete beginner. Thank you to EvaD for helping me take progress pictures when my hands were covered in clay. Also thank you to RyeD for helping me bake the brachiosaurus!
