Photo Blog #17: Negative Space

A photo of one of those things that hang from the ceilings and have the planets on them. I'd write the name here but I forget what they're called.
Solar System

This was a prompt I struggled with, and I’m still not sure how I feel about this photo. Out of all the photos I tried to take for this prompt, I feel as if this one is the best, but I’m not sure if I’m completely satisfied with it – I might try and experiment later, to figure out how to work with Negative Space. At the very least, for this photo, my attempt at creating negative space was through the white ceiling – with the planets (I forget what these things are called) being the subject of the photo. If I were to take this photo again, next time I would close the door – in the hopes that it would be less of a distraction.

Photo Blog #16: Shadow

A photo of a bunch of leaves in shadow, with the occasional highlight of sunlight on it too.
Photosynthesis

For the shadow prompt, I thought it would be a cool idea to take a photo of something mostly in shadow – so the highlights/areas not in shadow would pop out and make the photo more interesting or engaging. Of all the photos I took, this one was my favorite – I took it in the living room, where my mother has a lot of her plants set up near the window.

Photo Blog #15: Anonymous

A pair of shoes in the corner of a photo of afield of grass.
Left Behind

For the prompt “Anonymous” two things came to mind: a silhouette (that is commonly the profile picture of an anonymous account), or the concept of something being left behind. I thought shoes would work well, since shoes aren’t something people often bring with them/usually don’t choose to leave behind, and it would make someone think “who do these belong to?”

I took a number of different photos across the house (my mom has a lot of shoes), and ultimately I decided on this photo where I was standing in the yard and chucked off my own pair of shoes. I liked it better than all of the other photos I took.

Photo Blog #14: Center Frame Portrait

An image of three tiny little plants that are placed in little balls of glass that look like bubbles. The focus of the image is the one in the middle, that looks like a tree that is reaching out at the viewer.
Bubbled Plants

I took a number of photos for this prompt, and this photo was what I believe to be the second best. The best photo I took for this prompt, however, was one that I thought would work better for another prompt, or theme, so I plan to save it for another day. (The other photo also felt more generic than this one – I liked the vibes of this photo, which is why I chose to use this one for the assignment). Thank you to my sister who unknowingly let me sneak into her room to take this photo.

Photo Blog #13: New Beginnings

A photo of the first page of a notebook. There is nothing written on it, but a pencil sits, waiting to be used. (In the corner there are candles because the photographer thought it was aesthetic.)
First Words

When I first thought of the prompt “new beginnings”, an empty notebook or sketchbook was the first thing that came to mind. It’s always so much fun to have a notebook unfilled – because there’s so much potential as to what you could fill it with – to see what will become of it from beginning to end – which is why I chose for my photo to take a picture of a new notebook. (I have a huge collection of empty notebooks and sketchbooks, I really need to start filling them before buying new ones).

Photo Blog #9: White Balance

Lighting Up The Dark

I waited until night to take this photo – hoping that the hanging lamps of my kitchen would help to create a.. if not mysterious, at the very least intriguing or interesting atmosphere. I’m not quite sure how I feel about this particular photo – there’s probably room for improvement – but I do like the emptiness of the photo – I was trying to make it seem like the lights have been left on for someone who isn’t there anymore, a little bit – and I don’t know if I achieved that, I hope I at least came a little close?

Photo Blog #8: Leading Lines

Anything There?

For this photo, I tried to incorporate leading lines – the line of the bed, as well a the lines from the knocked over chair – to lead the view to look into the darkness under the bed. At first, I wasn’t sure how to interpret the prompt of “infinity”, but eventually I settled on the concept of “childhood imagination.” A child’s imagination could be considered infinite – children are always playing pretend and coming up with stories inside their minds – so I thought that referencing the classic “monster under the bed” would work well for this photo.

Photo Blog #7: Love Story

My Babies

The prompt for this particular photo was “Love Story.” Love doesn’t always have to mean romance – it can also refer to familial love, platonic love, or love of hobbies, interests, specific, items – it’s a topic that isn’t limited. So for this photo, I thought it would be fun to incorporate things that I personally love – manga (though in this case these are more zines and advertisements for manga than the actual thing), as well as my stuffed bear that I’ve had ever since I was a baby, given to me by my grandmother. I chose to take the photo on my bed and had the bear lean against my blanket, because sleeping and relaxing is also something I love.

Photo Blog #6: Weight Or Mass

Owl or Flowers?

This assignment was one where we had to try and balance two different subjects in a photo, so that the viewer’s eyes wouldn’t be drawn to only one of the items. In order to attempt this, I took many photos of the different kinds of flowers around my yard, before finding my mother’s owl statue – and realized that it would work better as a second subject rather than just a different kind of flower – which resulted in this picture.

Photo Blog #5: Symmetry Landscape

Autumn’s Summer Trees

For this assignment, we had to take a photo of a landscape that was symmetrical. The street next to mine always has beautiful trees on both sides of the road, so while it wouldn’t be perfect, I thought that it would be a good place to take such a photo. Normally by this time of year, (or maybe a little later), the trees would all be yellow and gorgeous – rather than just yellow at some of the tips – but this year, the leaves have remained green.
