The assignment was to make a photo portrait without our faces – that also expressed who we are. I thought that taking the photo in front of my bookshelf would be fun, considering how much I love to read manga (which my bookshelf is full of), and I put my markers, sketchbooks, and notebooks at my feet to show how I also love to write and draw. To hide my face I borrowed my mother’s Ipad and displayed the kanji “watashi” – which means “me” – to play into the fact that I myself am Japanese.
