Humor

The Freestyle Humor Project was the last ever project we ever created here at freestyle academy. We were tasked with examining two pieces of humor from comedians of our choice, I picked two of my favorite comedians, shane Gillis and Tim Robinson. We were then asked to implement aspects of their humor into our own humor project, I used Tim Robinsons absurdists humor style, and Shane Gillis’s satirical humor. Something I valued about this project is how free we were in creating it. Our only real requirement was to implement 3 humor techniques into our project, besides a hat we could do essentially anything. Something else that I really enjoyed about this project are all the different type of projects people made, and seeing their kind of humor.

humor proposal

The two humorists I chose were Tim Robinson and Shane Gillis. Tim Robinson’s target focus is everyday social situations, awkwardness, and humorous dynamics. Shane Gillis focuses on American politics, political correctness, and masculinity. Tim Robinson’s main themes are absurd characters who don’t conform to usual behavior, which leads to surreal scenarios. Shane Gillis focuses on the themes of mockery with empathy. He may tell some offensive jokes, but he often brings it around in a self-deprecating or affectionate way. Tim Robinson uses a real absurdist humor technique, which takes recognizable situations and chaotically twists them. Shane Gillis focuses on irony and satire, often playing the role of the uninformed guy to critique things he doesn’t endorse. Tim Robinson has a sketch titled “Pay It Forward,” where he tries to start a pay it forward chain at a fast food drive-through. then escalates as the car in front of him figures out that he’s trying to start a pay-it-forward chain as he tries to order a lot of stuff. An example from Shane Gillis is a joke in which he says he has a lotta people in his family with Down syndrome, he then goes on to say that it “barely got me”, making a joke of himself and his appearance. I enjoy the techniques they use, such as absurdism and satire. I also enjoy the themes of real-world scenarios from Tim Robinson. And the darker humor from Shane Gillis.
