Introduction

In this humor project, we’ve looked at comedy through all kinds of mediums – classic literature, sketch comedy, stand-up, print ads, TV commercials, political cartoons, speeches, and even songs. Along the way, we’ve learned how verbal, written, and visual comedic techniques can be used to grab attention and deliver a message. In final task in this unit was create your own sense of humor with collaborations or individual.

Humor Proposal

For my humor proposal, I explored the comedic styles of Ken Jeong and Teppei Arita, two comedians from very different cultural backgrounds who use humor to connect with audiences in unique ways. Arita, known for his role in the Japanese variety show All Out! Relax Time (全力! 脱力タイムズ), uses situational comedy and absurd news parody to create unpredictable and entertaining content. His show cleverly confuses one guest by giving them a completely different script, while the others follow a shared storyline, all while maintaining the serious tone of a news broadcast. This structured chaos inspired me to explore humor that plays with expectations and professional roles. On the other hand, Ken Jeong’s stand-up comedy is rooted in personal storytelling, dark humor, and self-deprecation, often drawing from his experience as an Asian-American and former doctor. His ability to transform vulnerability into laughter influenced me to consider how comedy can create emotional resonance. What I found most valuable in studying these humorists is how both use identity and exaggeration to bring people together through shared experiences. For my group project with Ynex and Maisie, we’re developing a comedic skit that satirizes modern “gym bro” culture—a caricature of over-the-top fitness guys who take themselves way too seriously. We plan to use satire, caricature, and slapstick to bring this exaggerated world to life, creating scenes that feel familiar but hilariously absurd. A gym bro lifting weights in his sleep or giving life advice while flexing is just the kind of humor we want—relatable, visual, and over the top. I’m excited because this project lets us mix everyday experiences with bold comedy techniques, though we’ll be mindful to keep the content clear and collaborative. Next, we’ll start writing the script and building visuals to make it as entertaining and memorable as possible.
