Explorations

The Process

The explorations project was our last project of the year and it was a chance for us to search for a skill we wanted to improve on and master that skill in the span of 4 weeks. Personally, I chose to study noir films and what made them separate from other movies. I chose this because film noir’s aesthetic is always something that’s referenced in other movies and I never knew what film noir really was. I also wanted to improve my visual literacy and my ability to self direct my own project.

First was the research. In order to learn how to master our topic we had to research a fair amount online and elsewhere. I researched on different websites what noir film was and I also watch some noir films like The Maltese Falcon, Shock Corridor, and Double Indemnity. With all this research I developed a concrete understanding of what constitutes as noir film.

Next was my demonstration of my mastery of the skill: my product. I chose to make a hypothetical scene from a noir film that encapsulates what noir film is all about.

Infographic

To learn how to convey information in a captivating way, we made infographics about our subject and what we sought to learn.

Through the Explorations project I learned to appreciate the older films that set the standard for the films in today’s society. As a digital artist, I improved my style and ease with software applications like Adobe Illustrator and Premiere Pro.

Presentation

Here is a video of me presenting how I learned to understand and create film noir.
