To wrap up our time in English, we began by reading the book Slaughter House Five in english. An odd and chaotic tale of a man who survived a war. The book was interesting and taught us many different humor techniques to use in other avenues. The way the teachers put it, they wanted us to have fun with an assignment and see what we could create and maybe leave behind for ourselves to see in the future. Before we began we did an analysis on humorists in english. Mine is below:
The two humorists I want to bring up share a similar medium of film. Sasha Baren Cohen highly acclaimed comedian greatly known for his work in Borat is my first humorist that I wanted to focus on. I think his work is super funny and always really out there and pushing boundaries. He manages to piece together many sometimes random clips and skits to together make an entirely hilarious viewing experience that leaves you with a lesson. It may not always be clear what you should think after watching one of his films but I think that sometimes thats part of the point. They make you question the different stereotypes that you encounter, they make you in on a joke being played on other people. The somewhat visceral reactions that the “normal people” have in his movies is the real message. What gets us riled up? What makes you lash out? The second humorist I want to bring up is the youtube channel group VlogCreations. They also engage in skits where they play outlandish characters to get a reaction out of people who arnt in on it. They often set up absurd situations and put regular every day people in them. I remember one that sticks out in my brain was when they went to the mechanic after filing a car’s gas tank fully with beans. They went to the shop and started acting clueless as to why their car might not be working. Safe to say it was hilarious and the mechanic was totally lost as to how that might have happened and why someone would do that to their car.
I think some techniques that I might want to take away from these two humorists is the use of people playing a character interacting with every day people as well as the sort of hidden camera prank method that both my humorists engage in.
