For the “Eyes” Photo Blog assignment, I chose to take a picture of my dad’s eye. The shallow depth of field allows his eye to take center stage; every element drawing the viewer towards his eye.

I’ve isolated my subject in this photograph by placing him in the center. I think that this feeling of isolation is added to by the expansive and seemingly unending background. This way of framing a portrait makes it seem as though by subject is alone and facing the unknown.

To me, the ocean represents a world of possibility, or rather, new beginnings. However, we often feel trapped or stuck when trying to start anew, represented by the fence my subject is struggling against.
