Future

50mm 1/125 f16 ISO200

My future will take me to New York. I took this picture over the summer, the last time I was there. In this picture, I was surrounded by filmmakers, exactly as I will be starting next fall as a film major at New York University. I also appreciate how this picture captures the New York City skyline, a visual of possibility and opportunity.

Self-Portrait

I felt that my self-portrait wouldn’t be complete without include my friends. Throughout my senior year, I’ve discovered how much of my identity that they make up. It is the things we have gone through together and the way we have shaped each other that makes us who we are. I’m about to graduate, and I am graduating with the realization that growing up is not an individual process. Growing up means growing together; you cannot grow without learning from the people you surround yourself with.

Using Props

I wanted to go above-and-beyond with my use of props. As a director, it’s important to consider the color scheme of all props that you use. I wanted to emphasize the color red in this photograph, drawing attention to my prop, the main source of red.

Modern Convenience

50mm 1/125 f11 ISO200

A modern convenience that I absolutely can not live without are cars. Cars have brought me to so many different places and so many different adventures. My goal with this photograph was to demonstrate the type of adventures that cars can bring us to.

Creative Staged + Depth of Field

50mm 1/125 f11 ISO200

I wanted to challenge myself for this Depth of Field photo blog. I feel that it is easiest to convey depth of field when you having leading lines and narrow spaces. As such, I challenged myself by taking my photo in an open space, a less clearly “deep” environment. In doing this, my main tool for conveying depth would be staging my models further apart, showing that there is distance between them.

Deadly Sins

50mm 1/125 f8 ISO800

For this assignment, I chose the deadly sin of sloth. I staged my friends Renee and Dayva to be laying down, relaxed. I wanted to portray that, even though each of them is in the company of a friend, they aren’t taking advantage of that companionship. Instead, they are lazing around.

Musical

50mm 1/125 f8 ISO800

For this week’s photo blog, Mr. Flo tasked us with representing how “music is part of the soul.” I’ve never found this statement to be more true than when I’m at a concert. There’s something about experiencing music with a crowd of others that I find very soulful. It’s something that brings people together, and it is the collective effervescence of groups like that that really fosters appreciation for the art.

Viewpoint

50mm 1/125 f8 ISO600

At first, I was kind of confused by the “Viewpoint” photo blog. It seemed too broad of a concept; I felt that any photograph could represent a viewpoint. As such, I wanted to add an element to my picture that really demonstrated that it could be from the perspective of someone’s own eyes. I decided to subtly include my pointer and middle finger right in front of the camera, as if to show that someone was peeking through their eyes.

Small vs. Large

50mm 1/125 f11 ISO100

This is a picture that I took of my friends CC, Ellie, and Elsa. In composing this photograph, I wanted to create some contrast between my models. By staging CC closer to the camera, I was able to give the effect that she was larger than Ellie and Elsa, who appear smaller in the frame.

Long Shutter Speed Exposure

50mm 1/125 f8 ISO800

I took this photo at the Field of Light in Paso Robles. For long exposure photography, it’s important to consider what you want your source of light to be. I thought this exhibit would be the perfect photo opportunity, as it is, quite literally, a field of light. The variety of colors also makes it an interesting photograph. I appreciate that this assignment is reflective of the New Year, as I think light symbolizes possibility and hope.
