Film Noir

140mm 1/140 f4.0, ISO 800

In this assignment we were told about, and expected to demonstrate, Film noir as a concept. Film noir is great for dark moody storytelling, which I find very very cool! I was looking through many of the photos I took during our rehearsals for Hadestown, and found this photo. The photo depicts on a surface level, a girl looking up to someone else, with a cane and appears the other figure has a hand on the girl. While that is the truth, there is a deeper more concerning story to this photo in the context of the story. The girl is Euridiyce , a girl who is desperate for shelter and food, and strikes a bargin with the figure, who is Hades, king of the underworld. In the story, and this version of the story, the results of what happens to Euridicye, and what she decides, influences the rest of the story.

I really like this photo, and I believe the noir darker aesthetic really creates and invokes a powerful meaningful message and story.
