Narrative Visual Perspective in Digital Media

For this project, students had the option of creating a multi-layered project out of either wood, paper. Students drew their pieces in Adobe Illustrator, and had them cut out onto wood, or paper to create stacked wood art, 3D ring art, or a light box scene.

I paired up with my friend Alayna, and we decided to do a stacked wood art together. The reason that we wanted to do a stacked wood art is because we wanted to create separate pieces that go together, and draw something in a style both of us enjoy. Both of us like drawing in an anime style, and with inspiration from a few of our favorite online artists, we designed a yin and yang style piece. Similar to some of the examples we saw in class, we wanted our projects to go together, but include distinctive aspects of our art on our separate parts. We are approaching this project similarly to how we would even if this wasn’t for a class, so for me it feels more like a personal project I’m doing with a friend, rather than an assignment.

Process

To begin, we drew some very rough sketches, digitally and on paper. After that we redrew the final design in Illustrator. We indicated the parts we wanted engraved with red lines instead of black lines.

Assembly Videos

We filmed the process of us assembling our wood art pieces together to create a short time-lapse. I edited this video together in After Effects, by speeding up the footage, editing the footage together, and adding music and text. I also recreated an assembly of our piece using After Effects and making the Illustrator layers 3D.

Our piece focused more on the engraving for details, rather than many layers of stacked wood, so was very time-consuming to make sure all of the lines were aligned properly in Illustrator. Additionally, since our piece had lots of engraved parts alongside everything that needed to be cut out, I had to check our file numerous times to ensure the engraved lines were correctly indicated and separate from the parts that needed to be cut out. Although it was very time consuming, I’m really proud of the final pieces, and I might paint mine, and turn it into a clock outside of class.
