Showcase

Introduction

Hello, and welcome to my showcase page. My name is Leanna Chun, and I am a student at Freestyle Academy. Throughout this program, I created a multitude of projects using a wide range of professional programs, mediums, and technics, I have gained taking Animation, Digital Media, and English. Although I felt like I lost my Junior year to Covid as all my Freestyle classes were online, I am still very glad I have had the opportunity to participate in such a unique program. I love the community that we have built here on campus, and although many projects have forced me out of my comfort zone, I am still glad I attended Freestyle.

I joined Freestyle because I am an artist, and I always have been. Although I’m still not sure what I want to study in college, I know the set of skills I have built here will be beneficial to me in the future.

Here are two, self-selected projects that I believe are my best work from the time I spent at Freestyle.

Splatoon 2 White Board Animation

One of my favorite project I did was in Junior year, which was the Conceptual Stop-Motion Animation I did in Animation 1. Personally, I like drawing animations rather than stop motion, so for this project, so I combined both into this project. The app that we used called Stop Motion Studio has a feature called onion skin, which allows you to see the previous frame on top of the current one, and I heavily relied on it for this project. This was definitely one of the most time consuming projects I have ever done, but I am very proud of how it turned out. Below my finished product you will find a time lapse of me actually completing this project.

Zenith

The second project I am choosing for my showcase is my Zenith project. The Zenith project gives seniors the opportunity to choose and create their own final project. The word “zenith” means: the time at which something is the most powerful or successful, so given that our final project for Freestyle is called the Zenith, seniors are expected to put in their best effort to create something unique and passionate about.

I had a difficult time choosing what to focus on for my Zenith project since I could almost do whatever I wanted to. I eventually chose to do an animatic/animated music video to one of my favorite songs “ただ声一つ”, which translates to “Just One Voice.” This project was a challenge for me because I didn’t have much time to do 2d animation, since I would be drawing all the frames by hand. Although I had to shorten my project, change animated scenes to still frames, and rush at the last minute, I definitely think this is one of my best works here at Freestyle.

Below you will find my final project, a process and explanation video, and the celebration video.

Personal Reflection

It is difficult to say what Freestyle projects I’ve enjoyed the most over the past two years, as there are numerous that come to mind immediately, and some I know I definitely wouldn’t put on that list. The two projects I chose for the Showcase were projects I put a lot of time into, and I truly enjoyed working on.

Freestyle didn’t come without frustration and challenge, but what I gained is such a valuable experience and set of skills. I have learned polished skills in Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, InDesign, ProTools, and more, to create products with a sense of professionalism. Getting the opportunity to practice these skills for class assignments was a nice change of pace from my other academic classes. Honestly, I can’t believe that my time at Freestyle is coming to an end, but I know I will carry the experiences and skills along with me to college and beyond. Thanks for reading!
