Narrative Visual Perspective in Film

For my project it was very difficult, this is compounded upon the fact that I was paired up with two first year seniors for my film project. One of which, never started working with our group, and the second, failing to meet deadlines, follow through with his word, and the ongoing communication breakdown.

Because of this we ended up stopping communication altogether, and I worked on my own project that I re-storyboarded, and semi-improvised with my own actors.

Lined Script

Original Script that I had lined in paper

What we did in order to line the script, is plan the location of the different cameras, where props were needed, the different kinds of shots, their angles, and for the duration they needed to be focused on a subject. This also includes things such as the wide-shot, close-ups, and any breaks, that are notated using a squiggle, or break in the otherwise straight line. For example, when another character is speaking, we break the shot, and note for editing how we will need to focus the camera on them.

The script and shot list above are both for the original film we had planned to create, before I broke off and did it on my own. For my film, I only felt the need to create a storyboard which I did on paper. My new film was about a boy who lies to a friend about the purpose of borrowing her coin collection. Only to later be discovered and confronted, being forgiven, but learning a lesson about honesty.

The Film

The Rough cut came out better than I had hoped given the short amount of time I had to film, and edit in because of the ongoing issues I had with my partner. I very heavily value all the time and effort Mr. Taylor had spent working with my and trying to help me with my difficulties. I learned many things, including, if you can’t rely on your partners, you will have to press forward on your own. Communication working in groups is key, and if you can’t have any communication, then there isn’t even a team.

This was one of my most fun projects, I just went out and created a film, normally lacking confidence to go out and shoot I learned that when times are tough you just have to go for it. Be proud of what you make, and not be too tough or picky when it comes to what you’re working with, make do with something even if it’s not perfect.
