Showcase

Welcome, my name is Nadine Sheridan and I’m an Animation student here at Freestyle Academy. This fall I will be starting at UC Santa Cruz, majoring in Plant Science. I learned a lot about 2D and 3D animation, but I would like to receive feedback on the yearbook I made for Freestyle.

Showcase Project

I decided to showcase the yearbook I made for Freestyle. This project is very special to me, as it is my way of giving back the community that taught me so much. Most of the work done for this project was done from early April until just a few days ago, in early May. To make this project, I used Adobe Indesign. There weren’t any new technical skills that I had to learn after completing my documentary article, but the sheer amount of pages really challenged my design skills.

The hardest part about this project was probably the expectations. I really wanted the people I knew to like it and was inspired by a lot of their works (like Lillian with the backgrounds). Additionally, having to write articles about the teachers was also really stressful, because I wanted to do them justice. Stresses like this made me spend a lot of time on the little details, which I probably should have moved on from.

That said, throughout this process I really grew as a designer. It was really hard to cram all the projects from one quarter in one page and it took a lot of work to give each piece enough breathing room, so that the pages looked full, not cramped. Additionally, I realized that I didn’t have to stick to the traditional rectangular and circular photo frames, but instead create my own shapes and place photos into them, which can be seen on some of the teacher’s pages. I tried to make the color scheme of each of the pages work, but they were very different and didn’t quite work as a book overall (oh well, I have yet to see a yearbook with a cohesive color scheme that doesn’t look lifeless though).

Overall I am happy with the result. I am looking forward to your feedback!

Demo Reel

Here is a demo reel of all my work here at Freestyle Academy as an Animation, Digital Media, and English student! Even though I will probably not be going into art, I still learned a lot of new skills and grew a lot as a person.
