Multi Layered Art Project

The multi layered art project had us create an art piece that related to our world building. Since Harry and I had similar characters in ours (my original story), we decided to make a big art piece together. Our idea was to make two samurai facing each other and he would make one side while I made the other. We originally wanted to make it more complicated but settled on making it simpler, much like Japanese culture.

The Process

This was the side that I designed to be put together with Harrys. Each layer is a layer that we had to print out. Harry and I chose to do wood art, so our pieces were carved out of wood.

Construction

After printing out all our pieces, we had to glue the parts on together in layers. We took our individual parts home and glued them together before coming back to school and glueing our characters on a Japanese flag background.

3D Assembly

After making this in real life, we then colored our layers in our After Effects files. After that, we were supposed to make a 3D Assembly video showcasing all of the layers that we created.

Artist Statement

I really enjoyed making this. Working with a partner helped smooth the process and motivate me. I learned a lot during the process specifically when creating the 3D digital assembly. Because we had to learn lighting and about how the layers move, I got to learn about how to do the parallax effect. Its something that I wanted to learn how do do but didn’t know that it was so simple. Also, animating flat layer in a 3D space is something that is super cool to me, as well as putting custom lighting in After Effects. In all, I think this project has been one of my most favorite in terms of the things that we learn.
