02 | Rule of Thirds

A path stretches away from the camera, into the woods.
A lonely road, through the vast arboreal landscape.

“Use the Rule of Thirds to convey motion.”
This past summer (2023), I had the wonderful experience of spending over a month in Europe with my family. We visited several different Western European countries, and it was one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had in my life. The picture above comes from one of the most beautiful and scenic places I visited while in Europe– the mountains of the Austrian Alps.

On a stunning mid-summer evening, just outside the tiny ski town of Berwang, Austria, my family and I took a gondola up towards the nearby mountains and spent an hour riding down the trails on mountain scooters through the stunning forests in the valleys between. The photo above is one of the many photos I took of the nature, and I employed the Rule of Thirds to emphasize the motion of the path– winding through the trees and into the horizon.

I am aware that this photo was shot on a phone, and the camera settings were likely automatic as opposed to the DSLR’s manual settings, so I have a large library of photos I took with the manual camera this past weekend while apple picking. You can view them here -> [Additional Photos]
