At the beginning of the Narrative Unit, we created our Flash Fictions, which were short stories limited to 300 to 500 words. We wrote two of these stories, and eventually we made one into a graphic novel, animatic and then into an animation. One of my favorite parts of this entire unit was creating my graphic novel, which served as a basic outline for the remainder of our projects in Web Audio. However, I did not follow these steps and I based my graphic novel, animatic, and animation off a different story. My Flash Fiction entitled Title Fight is the basis for my character portrait, which can be found here.

Title Fight

Young Pastella is a 16 year old girl who lives in Valesunny, California. It had been an arduous night for her, as she prepared for the State Boxing Finals in a few weeks. Her boxing schedule grew exponentially more rigorous as the championship date creeped closer and closer. Pastella stood at a solid 5 foot 5, with bright blonde hair and vibrant green eyes. She often wore overbearing trench coats which heightened her intimidation factor, leading her opponents to cringe in fear when appeared in the ring. She attends Stylefree Boxing Academy where she thrives learning the necessary skills to become the best.

Waking up had been especially straining due to her extended boxing session with her friend Darlene, who had also entered the competition, but lost in the prior round. Although she was heartbroken, Darlene looked past it as she helped Pastella refine her fighting skills to perfection. She dragged through the day only to practice just as hard later that night, and repeating the process until the night before the fight.

Although Pastella outputs a rough exterior, she was actually very nervous about whether or not she would come out victorious in the competition. The amount of effort that Pastella had put into this competition has been unparalleled in her previous years, which made failure seem even more menacing. The only remedy for her nervousness was more practice, even if it cause her great fatigue.

As the big day finally arrived, Pastella was freaking out. Thoughts of self doubt flooded her mind like a tsunami that flooded a coastal city. Even though she was supposed to be resting, Pastella trained late into the night, worried that she hadn’t trained enough in the preceding weeks. In honor of Pastella’s immense effort, Darlene rented Pastella a private jet to transport her the 8 and a half miles to the arena. Throughout the short lived plane ride, Pastella nervously awaited the confrontation between her and her opponent, the MMA champion, Pastella. Jemma is notorious for her jokingly rude remarks and her leaf like fighting technique.

Upon entering the arena, Pastella stared down her opponent The night before the deadly encounter with Jemma, Pastella was hard at work training, when she should have been resting. As a result, the blonde pugilist was weary, whereas her minty counterpart was well rested and ready to tussle.

When the match commenced, Pastella’s fatigued fighting was no match Jemma’s leaf-like fighting style, and in the end Jemma came out victorious. Pastella was disappointed beyond belief, but her friend Darlene was there to help her, and to give her advice that would perfect Pastella’s fighting career. Darlene advised Pastella to stress less about the outcome, and to be more confident. Had Pastella been more confident in her fighting skills the night before, she could have rested instead of wearing herself out through extensive training. Pastella strutted confidently back onto the private jet, knowing full well that next time she confronted Jemma, it would be a surefire victory.

The storywriting process has never been easy for me, but this unit has eased that burden on me. Through Flash Fictions and the graphic novel, I was able to make my writing more image based. This unit made the storywriting process enjoyable to go through, and it has given me a plethora of knowledge about how to write a story. The knowledge I obtained through this unit can be applied to all kinds of stories, and it also gave me some new insight on my creative abilities.
