Showcase

< Showcase the skills learned at Freestyle Academy for professional review. >

Hello! I’m William Anderson, a graduating design student, here at Freestyle Academy. Being a part of the Freestyle community has allowed me to explore my creative drive and further develop my artistic passion, and helped solidify my desire to continue design, following this road to Parsons- The New School, in New York for college.

For my Showcase, I have chosen my Junior Documentary and outside-of-school projects. I chose my Junior documentary book because it was my first introduction to this type of design and where I found my passion for publication design. I found my strength in graphic communication and visual storytelling through cohesive design across spreads and learned where I had fallen short. This inspired my later creation of a series of art magazines that feature my original art and photography. I started making these magazines to archive and hold a physical keepsake of my high school memories during my Junior year when I just started learning Adobe InDesign. Across the next year and a half, and the next 5 editions, I pushed myself to create and see how far I could use this form of media to explore graphic design. I ended up falling in love with the process and the satisfaction of opening the mail to find a professionally printed magazine, full of my friends, travels, stories, and art that I was most proud of. My passion for magazines connected back to school when I joined my school’s arts and editorial publication, SLAM magazine, where I led the photography team for the past two years.

I would like to know how I can make these projects more engaging. Where do my spreads and designs fall short and where can I improve? I would also ask- 1.) How do you find inspiration to step away from traditional design and into more creative design spaces? 2.) If editorial publication was a career I wanted to go into, where do you suggest I start?

I am attending Parsons School of Design in the fall, studying Communication Design, with a minor in jewelry. I plan on using this as a foundation for a career in print media. I want a career in a dynamic environment, getting to plan shoots, work with models and photographers, and be hands-on in the creation of my favorite publications.

I honestly had a great time creating these publications, from reminiscing while finding all the pictures, and planning out photoshoots specifically for these, to brainstorming layout ideas and concept pages, I had a lot of fun throughout the process. I am so thankful to Freestyle for exposing me to this medium and for my teacher Mrs. Parkinson who helped along every step.
