Storytelling: Long Shutter Speed Exposure

1/5 sec f/2 ISO 6400

This is the constellation little dipper. When I was taking this picture I was reminded of an experience I had back when I was a Boy Scout. One of my goals as an eleven year old scout was to get as many merit badges as possible. I did merit badges in classes, at midways, and most importantly, at Scout Camp. Astronomy merit badge was one of many that I got at scout camp. Leading up to that Scout Camp, one of my friends’ dads was showing his telescope to all of the scout’s dads. My dad and my friend’s dad have been best friends since college, and my dad thought that he should buy a telescope as well. He told my mom about how we would use it a lot and that maybe it would become a hobby, so the 300 dollar price tag would be worth it. Fast forward to scout camp. When my brother and I were in our merit badge class, we didn’t actually look at the stars until the last day of the class (typical boring merit badge procedures). When we actually did, we looked out of our telescope for a little bit and then gathered around my friend’s dad’s more expensive telescope. Since then, the telescope has sat in the attic and we haven’t used it since. After taking this picture I have made a goal for myself – to use the telescope again at least once before I graduate.
