Humor

For my humor project, I decided to take inspiration from my favorite type of comedy – skit comedy. Skit comedy allows an artist to make an audience laugh through a variety of methods, which is why I enjoy it so much. The main type of skit comedy I focused on in my project was an exaggerated, satirical form of skits. I chose to do it in this flavor because I’ve been inspired by a few classic comedians and tv shows.

I modeled my humor off of two of my inspirations, the long time Youtube comedian known as Ryan Higa, and the sitcom Community. I really liked their style of exaggerating different stereotypes you’d find in your life.

The show Community portrays a community college, and shows stereotypes such as a middle aged single mother, the high-school athlete that couldn’t get into a college team, and a hippie girl all about being woke and participating in different movements. The part that makes the show interesting is how the different characters interact with each other.

Ryan Higa does a similar model of skit comedy, but instead he chooses to develop each stereotype as their own character. His webisodes have a cult following, and have a lot of inside jokes about what happened previously in the “story”. The quality that makes him different from other skit comedians is the way he shoots his episodes. All of the characters are himself, but dressed in different clothing to tell the viewer which character is which. This is the first video in his series of episodes (Wow, 2009!)

I took a bit from each of their styles to make my humor video. For example, I used a lot of the situational humor that comes from different characters reacting to each other to try and build real personalities. I was also going for a sort of home-video theme for this, because everyone in my story was going to be in an online classroom, with poor-quality webcams and microphones.

I decided to use proper screenplay format as part of my pre-production for this project, so unfortunately I can only show it through pdf form.
